About

David S Shepard, Ph.D.

I am a licensed psychologist, practicing in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, and via telehealth.

I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern California in 1994. I also have an M.S. in Counseling from USC, with a specialization in marriage and family therapy, an M.S. in Film from Boston University, and my B.A. is from Amherst College

I am a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), and am Past-President of the Society for the Study of Men and Masculinities, a division of APA. I am also a member of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally-focused therapy.

In 2012, I received the Practitioner of the Year award by the American Psychological Association’s men and masculinities division.

For over two decades, I combined my clinical work with being a professor in the M.S. in Counseling program at California State University, Fullerton. The program trains graduate students to become licensed as marriage and family therapists, as well as licensed professional clinical counselors. My specialty was teaching the clinical courses - teaching and supervising prospective clinicians in how to do individual and couple therapy.

In 2023, I chose to retire from Cal St Fullerton in order to devote myself exclusively to being a private practice psychotherapist.

I have published numerous books, book chapters, and articles for professionals on how to make couple therapy a welcoming place for men, as well as on other issues related to conducting effective psychotherapy.

Prior to my career as a psychologist, I worked in the film and television industry, first as a director of development for a NY-based production company, and then as a writer and story editor on numerous animation series for CBS, NBC, and Nickelodeon, most notably, the show, Doug.
